Best Newborn Bed 2017

Sleepyhead Deluxe+

It looks great, it's easy to clean and it's one of the most versatile sleeping products on the market. We love the Sleepyhead Deluxe and we think you will too

After weeks of exhaustive real-life testing, the Sleepyhead Deluxe stood out head and shoulders above the rest. We loved its simple design that holds newborn and young babies safely as they sleep, rest or play, helping them to feel snug and secure. It looks great, is really easy to clean and got extra points in testing due to the fact that it can be used in so many different ways, providing great value for money.

Recommended by midwives and maternity nurses, the Sleepyhead Deluxe is a unique and versatile portable baby bed that provides all babies (including premature babies) with a safe and comfy spot to sleep. However, we found that it offers so much more than this, too.

Primarily, the Sleepyhead Deluxe is a multifunctional product designed to make life with a newborn or young baby as easy as possible. Most commonly, it's used as a bed where a baby can safely sleep but we also used it for quiet times, co-sleeping, lounging, playing, tummy time and even nappy changes. Toy bars can be purchased for an additional £22, and attach to the ‘loops’ on either side of the nest. To use the product for nappy changing, you simply unclip the clasps at the bottom. Because of this variety and for the amount of time we spent using it, it scored top marks under our value-for-money criterion.

The Sleepyhead Deluxe is also easy to move or store away and takes up little space, which makes it a perfect baby product for any parent or home. Lightweight and portable, it can easily be taken from room to room, to a grandparent's house or even on holiday, and can be used from newborn to eight months (although it’s worth noting that some babies will grow out of it quicker than others).

The design is simple yet clever. The Sleepyhead Deluxe has cushioned sides that help to reduce involuntary reflex movement, providing babies with a snug space that reminds them of the womb. It can be used instead of a moses basket, lie inside a bedside crib or cot, or even be used on the bed as a safe co-sleeping tool (always make sure you follow the instructions so you’re using it safely).

DS wouldn't sleep anywhere except on me until we got a Sleepyhead. I feel confident using the Sleepyhead - it's firm, the sides are secure and it's a darn sight safer than him falling asleep on me and me falling asleep.

Of all the cribs, nests and baskets we tried in this category, this was the product that our tester’s baby preferred to sleep in. Our tester also noted that the Sleepyhead Deluxe encouraged her baby to sleep better and for longer, too (although as every baby is different, your mileage may vary).

Aesthetically it looks great. The product is pleasing to the eye and of excellent quality. The ‘original’ Sleepyhead Deluxe comes with a white cover, however other colours and patterns can be purchased to suit your own personal taste. Separate covers can also be bought, if required, for an additional cost.

We did think that the white cover isn’t perhaps the best colour for a baby sleep nest. Luckily, it is incredibly simple to clean; you just unzip to remove the two cushions that make up the nest and pop the cover in the washing machine. In testing we found that the cover came out as good as new numerous times so it scored full marks in our cleanliness test, too. It offers excellent air-permeability and all materials used are breathable, hygienic, non-toxic and have surpassed all British standards.

Longevity-wise the product can only be used up until the eight-month mark, so if you’re looking for a more permanent solution this may be not for you. However, for fans of the product it is worth noting that the next product up in the range, the Sleepyhead Grande, offers the same benefits as the Sleepyhead Deluxe for older babies and toddlers and can be used from eight to 36 months.

All in all, we feel that the Sleepyhead Deluxe is a fantastic newborn bed. It scored highly on every single category in our tests, often receiving full marks and outshining its competitors.

It is expensive (retailing at around £120) but because it can be used in so many different ways, in our opinion it’s worth every penny.
